Enlil knew they were close when Precious began to run in circles. It was something that he couldn’t understand about the wolf and assumed a tic by the designers. Wouldn’t’ do to make a trained wolf all-powerful. They needed something to give her a weakness. No sense in the creation of an animal companion, which was impervious to everything a human, could through at it.

He scratched his beard again and wondered if it would be a good idea to shave it off soon. Beards denoted a warrior in this period, although they were difficult to maintain this hot weather. He reached into his pouch and made sure there was a small flask of olive oil. Strange how the little things became of such importance on the plains of Asur. This valley had some cedar tree forests, which gave a little bit of shade, but not enough to block the worst effects of the sun.

“What’s wrong with her?” Ninhursag questioned him. “That beast is acting crazy. Did the orientation package give you a clue why she might act that way?” Nergal game over to see what the problem was.

“Someone’s near,” Enlil told them. “Someone we don’t want to be around. It could be what or who guards the next crystal key, but I don’t think so. She wouldn’t act that way unless it was a very big threat.” He looked again at the tablet map, and then returned it to his other pouch.

With several gamer bands on the hunt for these keys, he felt the best course of action was to find the ones closet to them first in hopes it would be the safest way to gather them. At least they had a map of the key locations, most of the other groups didn’t.

Enlil looked through the cedar tree line and noted that something moved. It wasn’t easy to see, but there was something on the other side that attracted Precious’s attention. He was determined to find out what it was.

“You two wait here,” he instructed the others. “I need to see what’s upset the wolf.” He turned to Precious and pointed at the ground. “Stay!” The wolf sat down, but it was obvious she didn’t want to remain in place.

Enlil felt the brush on his legs as he pushed through the cedar trees. The source of the motion wasn’t far, not even a hundred yards. He could see it up close as he worked his way through the expanse, his war hammer cocked and ready. No one would catch him off guard this time.

Ten minutes later, he peered through the shadows of the trees and looked out. He sighed, as this is what he’d expected.

Mounted riders sat on their horses and looked around the landscape. These were not all
